Will you lead the Fellowship of the Ring, to defend the free peoples and destroy the Ring, or will you play as Sauron, to go after Frodo and Sam, while pouring your hordes at the gates of the opposing cities? The fate of Middle-earth is in your hands?!
A game is played in 3 successive chapters that unfold in a similar way. The cards of the current chapter are shuffled and then placed in a precise pattern with some cards visible, others face down, and overlapping cards. On your turn, take one of the accessible cards and apply its effect: develop your Skills, inflate your treasure, place fortresses on the central board, move your troops, catch Frodo with your Nazgul before he reaches Mount Doom, make alliances with the Free Peoples, etc. You immediately win the game by completing one of the 3 victory conditions: complete the Quest for the Ring (or catch Frodo), gather the support of 6 different Peoples, or conquer Middle-earth.
