Two to four players compete in two teams, the Free Peoples against the Shadow. The Free Peoples are desperately trying to carry out the destruction of the Ring. The Shadow must strike quickly and decisively before the Ring-bearers succeed in their quest

Each player has cards representing the strengths and weaknesses of the factions involved in the war. To win, you will have to focus on your objective but also monitor the actions of your opponents. During a round, you play cards representing characters, armies, items, and events from the War of the Ring. At the end of each round, the fights are resolved. You earn victory points by winning battles. Several possible scenarios, (from the Shire to the Mountain of Doom, another based on the first book, or the duel, for two players).
